Brahmin is who pursues brahma jnana, the mystic science about oneself. Brahmin is not the caste that is referred to by that word. Brahmins are respectable people who are in a higher state of consciousness. Remember again. By the word Brahmin, no reference to the caste is made.
But the people of Brahmin caste play cunning deadly knowledge based games, as they are privy to mystic knowledge. Those who are masters in material science are babies in spiritual science. there the Brahmin caste checks in and shows off their wares borrowed from the Masters.
Others play into the Brahmin ploys ending up admitting that their values are right ! Because the criticism or debate with Brahmins would be in their terms. By accepting the same, one has already approved their system ! Brahmins are very clever and cunning people who play with the psyche of others. Only with the British, the Brahmin ploys did not work.
Brahmins are definitely higher than the other humans But not the Brahmin caste. But those who pursue Brahma jnana. They are superior. And that is the meaning of that claim. Inheritance would not lead to knowledge. One has to work for it and acquire it. And it is blessed on the right candidates too.

Leave Caucasians aside, in India how one caste perceive others is what matters. i think most honestly believe they are superior. They can not be blamed for that as others do not make any effort to prove them wrong. In fact what is observed is that others tend to agree with them.
It is the same spiral initiated by the Caucasians, imagining themselves to be the best or even the truly evolved humans ! To them black people had evolved from Gorillas and Indians from Macaques ! Whether this is right or justified or not, this is the inherent feelings of average Caucasians. Then the others play accordingly to match or even surpass the hegemony. That is why when a Sachn Tendulkar happens, the Caucasians play it down to such extent that their upper hand is not affected. But they still know how to accommodate the merit which is rare among the rest. Whatever these Brahmins or upper castes pretend, they are nowhere near the competency level of the Caucasians. Like it or not.
Then the blame game starts. The local heroes, water snakes pretending as King Kobra among the frogs, try to find their ground by comparing themselves with the rest of locals. The real comparison with the Global competition is what is required. But these losers know that it simply is impossible. So they look for the local less privileged ones to compare and feel better. There several local values or terms of references are used for discriminating.
Colour of skin is one, because here people have skins ranging from coal black to the fairest. Then richness of family, height, looks, education, career position, status etc get added. The cricket and movie stars win the game.
But is that final ? No way ! The Brahmins bring in the 'knowledge' reference term here. Brahma vidya and enlightenment. Then it is a comparison game between who knows better than who enjoys life the best. Here the Brahmins easily win, because they know the shasthras, the secret science of the well being and Yoga. It has nothing to do with looks, wealth, health or position. It simply boils down to the naked truth with no worldly attachments. Brahmins very well know where they stand in the path to salvation. What they can't do, they do not attempt. But they really know where they stand in the hierarchy or level in the path to enlightenment. They keep this knowledge to themselves to survive and dominate.
A Sree Narayana Guru or Vivekananda can easily see the Brahmin's double standards. So they defend their position by finding fault with such Gurus and seers. Or by belittling them in their achievements. In Chennai, when Chinmayananda started Geetha discourses in English, the Brahmins objected claiming that sacred truths shall not be taught to undeserving people in a foreign language. Thus according to the Brahmins, Sanskrit is the only language through which Hindu scriptures are to be taught. That would require the world to bow to their feet and then they can finger again ! No one has made mockery of the knowledge like the Brahmins did. They made it their personal property.
But the light of knowledge cannot be hidden for ever what ever one does to hide it from. It will trickle out somehow. One day the whole world would know what they were denied by some self serving people with the intention of keeping the others in ignorance. There after it would be a slap festival by those who were denied the light of knowledge, knowingly and intentionally, to those who hid the light and kept the others in darkness.
